From the age of nineteen I started at the bottom of the ladder as a groom in one of the original dressage yards in South Africa, teaching other aspiring riders, bringing on many top competitive horses as well as winning competitions myself.

“over a 30 year

career in the

I have a long affinity in the equine world, and has a highly acclaimed horsemanship skills and a sound guiding reputation, in tough African bush condition’s built over a 30 year career in the industry.

My passion for conservation lead me to work for Clive Walker in the Waterberg

Working for Clive I spent my time not only organising and running environmental awareness expeditions on the 36,000 hectare reserve, for up to 100 children at a time, from diverse and mixed backgrounds, but also helping out with the reserve’s museum and restaurant business and gaining my FGASA qualification as a field guide.

“in the African horse safari industry for excellence, efficiency, empathy and all-round expertise in challenging environments”

Offered the opportunity to combine my two passions I began working at Horizon Horseback Safaris in the Waterberg. Here I not only helped the owner run a yard of 90 horses but also gave guests lessons in dressage and jumping as well as guiding the safaris and  allowing full rein to my lodge management skills. After a number of years I moved to  Dinaka Game Reserve where Horizon had a satellite safari operation with 25 horses in an area populated with rhino and buffalo. I ran this operation with two grooms for five years. In this time during my leave periods I was relief horse manager at the prestigious Singita Sasakwa Lodge in the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Wanting to expand my horizons and work in true African wilderness I secured myself the position of Horse Manager for Raw Botswana, at their remote camp in the north of the Okavango Delta. Here I had complete autonomy to run 24 horses and 10 staff and with the staff training I, instigated and the diligent hard work of all involved, Raw soon gained a reputation for having a string of what many guests considered to be, amongst the best safari horses in Africa.

I have carved myself an enviable reputation in the African horse safari industry for excellence, efficiency, empathy and all-round expertise in challenging environments that demand organization, innovation, adaptation and total dedication in order to produce a professional product, far from the convenient amenities and services of modern civilisation.

“one of the best

safari camp hosts”

I consolidated my personal reputation for not only being one of the best safari horse managers in the industry, but also by my hard and collaborative work with managers and staff, combined with my rapport and empathy with the guests, of being one of the best safari camp hosts, possessing a superb attention to detail and a genuine connection with the guests.

“being able to administer injections, set up drips and stitch wounds”

I train unskilled staff as grooms in correct care of horses, including general first aid I also successfully instruct them in being able to administer injections, set up drips and stitch wounds.

My extensive knowledge of horse husbandry was much appreciated by Raw Botswana in that there were very few occasions when an equine vet had to be called in to a remote camp.

For much of the six years I was at Raw I was the Back Up rider of choice for the Lead Guides and my extensive knowledge of the bush generally and the company’s area of operation in particular, was of great assistance to them ensuring the continued smooth and safe running of the safaris.

“guests’ expectations of their African horse safari and more importantly their horses are exceeded beyond anything they could imagine could be achieved in the remote wilds of Africa”

I was then offered a position by Limpopo Horse Safaris in the Tuli safari area to improve the existing horse safari operation, which I did. On finishing in Tuli in early 2020 I moved back to Maun and has been engaged in consultancy and advisory work with Ride Botswana both in the Okavango Delta and the Makadikadi Salt Pans. In addition to backing up the rides and helping run the back of house operations of this mobile, horse safari company, I have also been overseeing the horses, giving grooming and medical advice at their trail riding operation based at Royal Tree Lodge on the outskirts of Maun. In my spare time I have been contracted by various private individuals to improve their general riding and dressage skills.
